7 steps to harden your organization against cyber attacks, starting this month

A practical checklist any organization can start on right away to shrink its attack surface and make life harder for attackers.

Most successful cyber attacks don't exploit particularly sophisticated flaws. They exploit the basics: a weak password, an unpatched system, an overly broad permission. The good news is that most of these gaps can be closed without a massive project. Here are seven steps you can start on this month.

1. Multi-factor authentication for all sensitive access

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is one of the most effective defenses against identity theft. Start with remote access, corporate email and admin accounts, then expand.

2. Timely security updates

Set a regular process for patching operating systems, servers, network equipment and applications. Critical updates should be installed within days, not months.

3. Least privilege

Every user and system should get only the permissions it truly needs. Review who holds admin rights, remove inactive accounts and separate everyday accounts from admin accounts.

4. Network separation and micro-segmentation

A flat network lets an attacker who gets in move freely. Dividing it into zones, and in virtual environments micro-segmentation with NSX-T, stops lateral movement and limits the damage.

5. Isolated, tested backups

An untested backup isn't a backup. Make sure you have an isolated copy that ransomware can't encrypt, and run regular restore drills.

6. Monitoring and response

You can't stop what you can't see. Centralized logs, alerts on unusual activity and a clear response procedure dramatically shorten the time from detection to containment.

7. Your people as a line of defense

Short, frequent training on phishing and social engineering turns employees from a weak point into an early-warning sensor.

Security isn't a one-off project. It's a continuous process of improving, measuring and practicing.

Where to start?

The first step is a clear picture: what you have, where the gaps are and what the business risk is. At Aridox we run readiness assessments and build prioritized work plans, so every dollar goes where it reduces the most risk.
